An athlete on Level 1 of the Scale of Gritness is soft. They coast through life and at every obstacle, they turn back. They may know what they want to achieve, but they don’t have a plan and their efforts are aimless. They may have great talent but they’re missing the mental toughness that is required to be a top performer. If a Level 1 encounters a problem, they wait for the problem to be solved for them. They do not persevere, they do not persist; they only give up. In a firefight, a Level 1 instinctively hides behind a civilian. If it’s a day to train and it rains, a Level 1 will use this as an excuse not to work out and couch surf instead. They’ll put off training legs indefinitely and will never use free weights. A Level 1 doesn’t care what supplements they use, because they’re unable to follow through a full cycle of one before they’re onto trying another one.
If you’re a Level 5 on the Scale of Gritness you’re both halfway to greatness but still halfway to mediocrity. They have a decent physique and show flashes of Gritness, but ultimately fall short – lacking the self-control and discipline needed. A Level 5 is a key example of an athlete who has the knowledge to succeed, but either can’t or chooses not to apply this knowledge to take their physique to the next level.
CLOSE TO GRITNESS
A Level 7 on the Scale of Gritness is a good athlete, but is missing a key ingredient that could make them great. They may have a solid physique (they train legs), and sets both short and long term goals for their training. A Level 7’s Gritness is challenged when it comes to adverse situations. A Level 7 on the Scale of Gritness has self-control, but is overwhelmed by setbacks. A Level 7 is still not mentally tough enough to power through adversity. A Level 7 is a high draft pick that simply never lives up to their potential because they lack the true passion of an athlete who has True Grit.
IRON WARRIOR’S TRUE GRIT!
If you’re a Level 10 on the Scale of Gritness, you’re an extreme athlete with hard goals that you relentlessly pursue day in and day out. If you’re a Level 10, you’re driven by an insatiable need to do more than you have ever done before, and you don’t fear the thought of failing in your attempt.
A Level 10 athlete brings a level of gritness to everything they do. A Level 10 has the self-motivation and discipline to drive through a blizzard to get to the gym. They train legs on leg day not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard. A Level 10 is the guy banging out set of squats when everyone else is training chest. A Level 10 is a Hall of Fame athlete who thrived under the pressure and delivered championships and titles to a rapid fan base who scrutinized his every move.
A Level 10 is an athlete who beats cancer and comes back to lead the league in scoring with just half a season of games under his belt. #thatsgrit
